New Philips GreenPower LED toplighting - higher efficacy, higher light output, longer lifetime


Earlier this year we announced an efficiency upgrade of our European “tried and trusted” Philips GreenPower LED toplighting range. This efficiency upgrade results in a lower energy consumption for the recipes that were already available in the 2017 Toplighting range.

In addition, the range has been extended with new High Output (HO) versions delivering increased photon flux values of 620 umol/s. These versions enable growers to mount the modules on the greenhouse trellis, still delivering a good light uniformity, which means that light plans can be created with-or-without the use of C-profile constructions.

 

On top of this performance increase, based on latest LED specifications, the GreenPower LED toplighting now has a longer “rated average lifetime” of 35.000 hrs. The 400V input voltage module will be available for the European and Asian markets per early June of 2018. The Australian market will follow at the end of 2018. This new Philips GreenPower LED toplighting range will replace the 400V GreenPower LED toplighting portfolio currently sold in Europe, Asia and Australia/New Zeeland. This new range will not be available for the North American market yet, as it has no UL/CSA approbation. New stackable box packaging

At the moment of introduction, we will also change the packaging for these modules to a more robust cardboard version changing from three to four pcs per pack. This new packaging is designed for stacking which allows more products per shipment. The total weight of the four-piece packaging is below 15K, so it meets all European, Asian and Australian handling regulations.

New GrowWise Control System


Since May 25th, 2018 the GrowWise Control System (GCS) has been open for orders. The Control System gives growers the possibility to create their own customized light recipes via a simple web-based user-interface. Growers can access the GrowWise Control System anytime and anywhere using their own PC or tablet.
New GrowWise Control System

The GrowWise Control System is designed to be used in combination with the Philips GreenPower LED production module “Dynamic”. It gives growers and researchers the power to create their own recipes and steer, very precisely, the growth of their crops. It can be used to grow an ever-changing variety of crops during the year and it is ideal to investigate the effects of different light recipes or give the crops a pre-harvest treatment.

 

This control system enables growers to set each color (Deep Red, Blue, White and Far Red) independently from other colors and will utilize the full capabilities of the GreenPower LED production module “Dynamic”.

 

Individually created recipes will be stored in the system memory and can be activated on a 24Hr clock. This system can also operate as a slave computer when connected to a climate or logistic computer. In this specific setup it is possible to assign recipes to individual control areas via the Modbus IP interface.

 

All configurations are remotely serviceable and upgradable.

The system will be available in four configurations (control components in one box):

-        Configuration A: up to 128 modules in a single control area, for applications such as a Danish trolley or a growth container.

-        Configuration B: up to 256 modules in multiple control areas for flexible research applications

-        Configuration C: up to 384 modules in multiple control areas for small and mid-size city farms

-        Configuration D: up to 512 modules in multiple control areas for city farms

New LED light recipe improves both quality and yield of cut roses


The new LED light recipe for the Philips GreenPower LED toplighting module, improving both quality and yield of cut roses, is available as of now and is the result of many months of research in cooperation with Wageningen University (WUR) in the Netherlands.

 

Six light recipes were tested on the Red Naomi rose variety at the IDC LED. The trial also featured three feedback meetings in which growers, researchers and experts judged the crop during a blind testing. The Deep Red/White/Far Red (DR/W/FR) light recipe performed best in the test, as it both increased production and improved quality.

 

The result of two years of research

The research was conducted during the spring of 2017 and built on the work we did in 2016, in which we tested the effects of 100% LED light on cut roses. At that time, Signify (Philips Lighting) installed two light spectra: 2/3 of the area with Philips GreenPower LED toplighting Deep Red/Blue/Low Blue (DR/B-LB) and 1/3 of the area with Philips GreenPower LED toplighting Deep Red/White/Low Blue (DR/W/LB) with a focus on increasing production. During the summer and autumn of 2016 both yield and quality improved. In the winter of 2016-2017 the production (gram/mol) with LED lighting was similar to that with HPS, but the quality of the cut roses did not meet growers’ expectations and so it was decided that more research was needed to find the optimal recipe for cut rose growth, especially during the winter months. This resulted in the new LED light recipe.

 

The new LED spectrum will be tested further at the Delphy Improvement Center, which is also in the Netherlands. The trial at Delphy will incorporate the knowledge gained from the WUR’s experiments on climate, watering, fertilization, and juvenility. We will keep you updated on the outcome of the trial, so you can provide your customers with the latest information for the upcoming season.

New GreenPower LED production module – 120cm to be added to the portfolio & now available in North America

 

Launch in North America

The new Philips GreenPower LED production module which was launched earlier this year is now also available for North America as it has been approved by UL/CSA for wet conditions. The module will be presented at the Cultivate fair in Columbus, USA on July 14th - 17th.

 

Range extension

The range will be extended with 120 cm High Output versions and a Low Output version in 120 and 150 cm by September 2018. With this extension we aim to offer more flexibility in installation and application. The Low Output version specifically targets multilayer applications where low light levels are required, such as propagation and breeding.
