Maximise fish production with LED lighting

Innovative aquaculture lighting

According to the UN, nearly 90% of the world’s marine fish stocks are now fully exploited, over-exploited or depleted. There's a need for sensible policies to conserve fish stocks combined with responsible fish farming. With our LED lighting, we help customers with specific lighting conditions needed to optimise fish development and welfare, reduce production costs and increase revenue.

Our aquaculture lighting offer is built on our heritage in which we have been recognised to push the boundaries of lighting applications supporting the needs of our customers. Light has proven to be a powerful tool for enhancing fish production, while protecting its welfare.

Philips Aquaculture lighting addresses the specific needs of hatchery and grow-out sites either on land or off shore and have been developed in close collaboration with leading universities and institutes. Our lights incorporate the most advanced LED chipsets and controls with the finest marine grade materials ensuring durability under the toughest conditions.

Evolve your aquaculture

Light influences all lifecycle stages of fish and can be used as a management tool to control egg and larvae survival, the manipulation of smolt time, maturation control during the on-growing phase and broodstock spawning optimisation.

The impact of lighting on fish is complex and there are multiple elements to consider: intensity and distribution, quality of light expressed in spectral composition, and photoperiod undergoing daily and seasonal cycles.

Philips Aquaculture lighting is focused on unlocking the potential of lighting, combining results of research and application studies for your benefit: a light that is perfect for your fish!

Light is perceived by specific photoreceptors that influence physiology through neurons and signalling pathways.

Research programmes

PhD programme at University of Stirling

The aim of the programme is to understand the impact of different lighting conditions on Atlantic salmon physiology. The ultimate goal is to identify lighting strategies that boost growth and development during juvenile phase and successful on-growing phase. The project is being carried out in a special laboratory with controlled LED lighting provided by Philips Aquaculture lighting.

Post-doctoral programme at University of Bergen

This programme studies the neural activation and photoreceptor elements of the Atlantic salmon brain after stimulation with narrow-band LED light of different wavelengths. Analysis demonstrates that specific brain regions are activated under different lighting intensities and colours providing distinct responses. These regulatory effects of light are used to control production in terms of delayed maturation and growth stimulation.

Fish species research studies

At various research institutes and customers, studies are being conducted into the impact of light on salmon, trout, tilapia, eel and other fish. The aim is to identify optimum lighting solutions for these species.
